I am supose to get our 6 new fish today by ups. Well last night I thought I would test the tank water and see if the cycle has finished.... Far from it, the nitrites were off the chart and ammoina. The only thing I deemed safe was the ph.

I have a filter media pecie from my eheim in the tank, I thought that would speed things up. Oh it did, the water went from normal nitrite to off the charts.

So my question is, I am def not putting our new fish in that tank. They will go in my bowfront temp, So how long will this fishless cycle take from now w/ the huge nitrite spike I guess I am being impatient, the tank has been set up for at least 2 weeks now.

see if you can get some safe start at your LFS..its the new bio spira that doesnt need refrigie...then maybe you can add the fish with it....otherwise, its anyones guess how long a cycle takes...but its close with 0 ammonia and a nitrite spike as you know!! just not soon enough for your new babies

thanks I am going to just watch the chemistry close to get the cycle complete. luckily w/ 7 fishtanks I have somewhere to put the newbies...
I was hoping to put them in their perm tank, but I also want to put them in a healthy place. I am going to put off ordering any more newbies, I have a little list of cichlids to order. It actually gives me a little more time to get my rocks that I want for that tank, I don't have to be rushed this way.


I just thought putting a peice of filter media from my other tank would speed it up (and it has).
