ues ...run the 55 gallon filter for now...and use mostly everything from the 55 gallon ...when you get the new filter, cut a piece of filter media from the 55 gallon that will be running on your 220 gallon and stick it in there while running the new one..it will establish bacteria way faster....hopefully you get the new filter fast because that 55 gallon one wont carry the load for a 220 gallon..and yes, id run both if you arent going to run the 55 gallon...can never have enough filtration IMO...and think, with both filters running and established (eventually) you will have that extra filter to use in case of sick fish for a qarunteen tank (55gallon) if needed...

taradawn i dont understand why i shouldnt use my filter?? dont i need to run it so the bacteria can start to grow in it?
im just unsure that the 55 gal filter is going to be enough to filter 4 1/2 times the amount of water. would it be ok to only use this filter for a week or so? i would need to add my fish as i cant take there filter away and leave them there. i will put the 55 gal filter on and ornaments and fake plants. i will fit as much gravel as i can in my mesh bag and hang it by the 55 gal filter. when i get my new filter i will run both filters for awhile until my tank is esablished.
tkfury thanks for your reply all information is appreciated. i too think that the amquel messed up my bacteria. i dont know what prime is but i have read those posts too. i waited 2 weeks to test my water. the readings looked like they were going down only to go back up 2 days later. i havent saw a spike in nitrites. so i dont know if i missed it or if it just didnt happen. but i think i will just worry about getting the 220 set up and rescue them from that horrible water. thanks everyone!!\

your welcome and goodluck kim!! just stick to daily water changes once you see ammonia although you may not see any for awile in a 220 gallon..but until you get the other filter, keep the 55 running...and dont let it dry out from one tank until you get it to the other, otherwise you will loose the bacteria...you will do fine
