Bio-spira and slow cycling....

Ok, 10 days ago I added a bag of biospira with aquaplus as water conditioner (to make sure it wouldnt mess with the ammonia)on a 28gal tank with 2 mystery snails, 2 dwarf gouramis and a platy. right now I am seeing a 3.0 ammonia 3.0 Nitrites and 10 nitrates...

I have done 3 water changes and I had to use prime because I didnt have anything else available at the moment. (didnt do anything before one week passed to give time to biospira). but I dont know what to do now... nither nitrite nor ammonia are going down and I am seeing these constant spikes, my fishes gasping...

sorry your having such issues a few things could be happeneing...

1. your bio spira was a bad batch
2. your test kit could be bad
3. the aquaplus interupted to bacteria bloom in the bs
4. have you tested your tap water for ammonia?

at this point, daily water changes of at least 50% and im hoping someone pops in to help with the aquaplus..i know you cant use prime with bs...

I know...

when I first used biospira I checked and aquaplus does not interfere with ammonia. but ten days later when I had to do the water changes I didnt have anymore aquaplus so i had to use prime to condition the water...

I believe it was a bad badge.. but i am afraid for my fishes...

I would also say you got a bad batch. If it is not kept in constantly refridgerated, the bacteria will die,as there is no ammonia in the bag to feed them.I have used Bio Spira in the past with what I thougth were good results. It took about a week for the high ammonia, and nitrite levels to get to Oppm, but I do think it speed things up for me.I had been cycling for about 3 weeks before I added it.If you try it again,I would buy it from a different store. If you don't want to waste anymore money on it,I would start to do 10 to 20% daily water changes, until the cycle completes.I would also make sure you keep adding Prime with every water change.I would add at least half a cap with every water change.

I just did that and added 4 times the prime dose... as it says to detoxify nitrites.... my poor gourami seems so sick...
