The filters aren't the same... and the 5g's filter has been used in that tank before--I got it from my friend who had used it before, so shouldn't it take less time anyway?

i dont mean take the entire filter from the 2.5 just cut some of the media off and put it in your filter...and if your friend kept the filter wet and warm and running, its ok to use and should be cycled..if it dried out at all, its no good as far as a current cycle..you would have to start it again

Hey congrats on the 5g. and upcoming fry.

Shawnie's right, cut a peice of the filter media from the 2.5and see if you can stick it in the 5g filter (along with the 5g's filter media). If it doesn't fit, you can hang it in the tank or put some gravel on it to hold it down.

Good luck.

Welcome to Fishlore.

Most everyone gets bad pet store advice when they start out, so don't let that throw you.

If you can, I'd recommend treating the water with Prime and doing 25-40% water changes daily on the tank that she's in. On the other tank, just feed it a little pinch of flakes every 12 hours to get & keep it cycled.

Try looking at craiglist, freecycle, even yard sales to try to find bigger tanks and other equipment.
