How long to cycle?

I bought a 10 gallon tank for my Betta (he's not in the tank yet, I'm waiting until it's cycled) and started it cycling three days ago. I'm giving it fish food every 12 hours and keeping the temp around 80-82 degrees. How long does it usually take for a tank of this size to cycle using this method?

I don't want to sound impatient, I was just hoping to have and idea of when I should start buying plants for it. Also, I do have a cycled 55 gallon tank that I could take a used filter from, would that speed things up? The filter size is different so I would have to just set it in the 10 gallon tank though.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps

if you cut up part of the filter media from your other tank it'll speed things up. plants can be added at anytime. you do not need to wait for the cycle to complete.

Dont cut up your filter! Just put the filter media in a pair of panty hose or something of that nature and hang it in your 10 gallon tank. That is a sure way to speed the process up.

As for the plants, speedrhno is correct, you can add them at anytime.
