Help!! Ammonia Spike with Fish...

Help please, I changed my internal filter for an external one last week. The internal one kept stopping every few days and wouldn't start until I cleaned the media (in aquarium water of course) as the old one wasn't very trustworthy I decided to use the media to put into the new filter. Was all going well, my water has been clearer than ever before, until I did a water test on saturday, and my amonia was really high (all other levels fine). Immediately did a 50% water change but the levels were the same on sunday so ran to the shop and asked advice... He sold me some ammonia remover to put in my filter, which I did. Checked the levels later that day and they were as high as ever. Did another 50% water change. Have 2 Angelfish, 3 Swordtails and 6 cories. I think I may have lost my cycle when I changed filters and its now cycling again. Is there anything else I can do? Don't want to lose my fish. Haven't fed them since saturday either to try and stop the build up of ammonia.... Help!!

Hi mingofish..welcome to fishlore!

yes you probably started a mini cycle..

Bio-spira is the only thing to instantly cure your cycle...heres a link if your LFS dont carry it http://www.aquariumplants.com/Bio_Spira_s/47.htm

other wise daily 50% -70% water changes... goodluck

Thanks - have been checking the forum for help ever since I had a tank - its Fab!!

Unfortunately can't buy Bio-spira over here (the UK) apparantly they can't keep up with the demand over there!!

Will just keep doing those water changes... and do water checks everyday..

Yea, I was going to say the same thing, when I put my eheim on my 55 I started a mini cycle.. then when I added the biowheel a mnth later I did the same thing... I would bet that is what is going on w/ your tank.
