Cycling without a filter for the first 2 weeks?

Order from Big Al's won't be here for about a week or so, so I was wondering if I could start the cycle now with fish food, or is it pointless without the filter? The tank is bare-bones right now, not substrate or anything at this point (everything is coming in the order) Should I hold off on the cycle for now, or is it ok to start?

Might as well wait. The #1 growth spot for beneficial bacteria is in the filter. #2 is in the substrate. Not having either, I would wait.

I also agree with Sgould..
with no substrate.. or filter, and the fact that beneficial bacteria does not grow in the water, you may as well wait to get your equipment before you start cycling your tank. Its so hard to wait for everything to come together.. and Im sure your pretty excited about starting that tank, as I would be.
But you would gain nothing in trying to cycle your tank now.

the water might start smelling bad too. since there would be decaying food in stagnant water.

Good deal then thanks.

Not in too big of a hurry. Too much other stuff going on right now, though I'll be glad when I can get the ball rolling on it.
