Hi Richard,
what do you mean you think you over did it with the ammonia? What is the problem going on in the tank? Have you tested the water?

ive got higher ammonia readings than i would have liked i was aiming at 5ppm but i,ve gone way passed that of the scale ive got and the nitrites are taking an age to build up 0.3ppm, so i've turn the temp up to around the 30 deg c mark hoping to encourage growth hopefully later today i'll se a change! i only added the ammonia 3 days ago so i suspect im being a little impatient.

Hi Richard,
If you were aiming for a ammonia level of 5, and you have a higher level. just do a water change to bring the level down to 5. just take your time and dont try rush the cycle

I did the same thing when I started my current cycle actually. My ammonia was off the scale. I added teaspoons of pure ammonia instead of drops. I was worried that with it being so high, it would actually impede Nitrosomonas growth. I took out water and added fresh conditioned water back in and left it for a couple of days because my ammonia was still high at like 6ppm. I continued adding ammonia but with drops (5 drops/10 gallon). After one week I saw nitrites emerge so I continued adding ammonia at 3 drops/10 gallons because obviously the bacteria were alive and well eating the ammonia that was in there! After that everything was fine.

Yes you can, just keep testing each morning and top up with ammonia when the reading falls below 5.. after a week start testing morning and night for ammonia and nitrites, once the ammonia and nitrites fall from 5 to 0 in 12hrs you are good to go
