Help with nitrogen cycle

I know its long but please read and help me out. Thank You...
I baught my 10 gallon tank about almost 2 months ago. I had 3 danios for about 2 weeks. I checked my amonia, nitrite and nitrate daily with test strips. And i thought that nitrogen cycle was done. I then baught 3 guppies. They all died in about a week and so did one of the danio, because of amonia poisoning. I regularly changed water and vacuumed gravel but for some reason amonia kept going up every other day, after water change. Someone suggested that cycle was probably never done. So i baught a liquid test kit and started cycle again with 2 danios. Now its been 3 weeks and now amonia is at 1.0 for last 2 weeks and nitrite went from .25 to about .50 and nitrate 0 And i havent changed water in 3 weeks. My question is, is it possible that my nitrogen cycle was done already about 3 weeks or month ago?

Re: Help with nitrogen cycle

if you have ammonia or nitrites, the tank isn't cycled yet. with cycling a tank that has fish in it, you just have to keep up with regular water changes and let the fish be safe. We just cycled a bunch of tanks that way in about a month. when you cycle without fish, you have to feed the tank a pinch of flakes every 12 hours to get it to cycle - that's when you don't change the water. When you have fish in the tank, you need to do water changes to keep the levels from going to high. it will still cycle in time and we've not lost any fish to cycling this way.

Re: Help with nitrogen cycle

The fact that your nitrite is increasing is good, from a cycling point of view. It is confirmation that your cycle is progressing, and that bacteria is beginning to take care of the ammonia for you. Take BettaCouple's advice on water changes, though, to keep the cycle from killing your fish.
