Seeding new tank with gravel from cycled tank

I want to start cycling a new tank using gravel from my cycled tank. The new tank is set up and has been running for close to 24 hours. I fed it some flake food last night and this morning to get the ammonia started. How soon can I add some gravel from my cycled tank? Also, can I keep the gravel in a cup so it can be easily removed (different colors) or does it have to lay on the bottom of the tank with the new tank gravel?

Thanks again for all your help

What kind of filtration are you using for the new tank?

The new tank has a 10i whisper filter. It's a small 3 gallon tank. My cycled tank is a Hex 5 gallon with a bio wheel and eclipse filter system.

Re: Seeding new tank with gravel from cycled tank

I'd put the gravel in a cup right under the intake for the filter. Then make sure you're introducing something to feed the bacteria, either food (which has to break down to produce ammonia), waste (from a fish), or a little bit of pure ammonia.
