Fishless Cycling...slowly

Hello to all! As I am very new to all this I just have some questions and/or a need for reassurance about my cycle,

I set up my 5 gallon tank about a month ago, landscaped and planted it and started to add fish flakes. The tank got really dirty and I had yet to get any ammonia readings so decided to do a 50% water change, clean it up and discontinue with the fish flakes. Found some pure ammonia and have started to add it - beginning with 5 drops, on the second day now. My readings today are Ammonia 3 and nitrate 0.15, not tested yet for Nitrates.

Does this sound right? Also I wonder if I am adding too much ammonia for such a small tank?

Cheers from Yokohama

Sounds good to me.Since you don't have any fish in there the high Ammonia reading is ok.

Re: Fishless Cycling...slowly

Thanks Carol. Today's readings - Ammonia still 3 but Nitrites up to 0.5. Does this mean I should add less ammonia now? 3 drops compared to 5 before?

Re: Fishless Cycling...slowly

Your cycle is moving right along I would still put in 5 drops each day.
