29 gallon tank cycling & a question?

I just started up my new 29 gallon tank this morning.....gonna cycle without fish. I'm doing it right this time. The pet store owner is gonna give me .50 per baby fish. I'm gonna have a mated pair (Convicts) in the 29 gallon. I was also figuring on starting up a 55 gallon....didn't think I had room, but I do actually. I was wondering if I could keep any other cichlid....a smaller one in the tank at the same time & then tansfer it when I do my 55 gallon. I was thinking about maybe a small firemouth cichlid or perhaps a Jack Dempsey. They have little ones at the Petco. My convicts are now in my 20 gallon. I had to put a tank divider in there because the African cichlids were after my convicts, but I took the diveder out & everbody's gettin along in there now. My convicts are small, but the pet store owner said that the female is about to lay a bunch of eggs. I was thinking about making my 20 gallon tank into an African cichlid tank. I like all of the colors & the agressive nature.

The convicts get quite nasty when protecting fry. I think once the convicts start having babies in that tank, you will have some real problems. Mixing african cichlids and South American cichlids is usually not recommended because they don't get along well. My suggestion would be to move the africans to the 55 gallon, and do some research on what's compatible with what you already have. A 55 gallon african cichlid tank would be beautiful! Here's a link to some cookie cutter set ups for cichlids:

Gunnie is right. I had like 8 Dempsey's back a few years ago, but when 2 paired and laid eggs, they proceded to slaughter all the rest. It wasn't pretty.
