There really isn't a problem with changing your filters, just get the new one, and run both until the new has a chance to be seeded with bacteria, 2 weeks should be more than enough. I think some here like Aqua Clear
HOB filters. Bio Wheels are probably good also. If you want to go top of the line, order an Eheim, I have never used their HOB filter, but plan to as it looks like it would do a better job than the other two mentioned. Here is a link to a chart where you can get more info on Eheims.

The 2041 looks good for your tank, then if it were me I'd buy a sponge filter to place over the intake, which multiplies the area that bacteria can colonize. I do this with my fry tank, it has to be rinced once a week, but water draws up through it very well.
