Kick start the cycle with raw fish.

Hi All,

Just a quick question.. I read in the article below and decided that I am going to cycle my spare tank with a piece of raw fish and a running filtering system. I followed the instruction below and drop a piece of raw fish into the tank and within a week, the ammonia level has gone up to 4.

Now, my question is, should I leave that piece of raw fish in the tank after the high ammonia reading that or should I take it out? The ammonia level still not declining after about another week.

Code:
Starting The nitrogen cycle Fishless
There are a few different ways to get this process started. To easily get an
ammonia reading from your tank water try the Seachem Ammonia Alert. It
sticks inside the tank and has a circle that changes color depending on the
ammonia levels in the tank.

Option 1:
Using Fish Food
Drop in a few flakes every 12 hours. As the food decomposes it will release
ammonia. You will have to continue to "feed" the tank throughout the
process to keep it going.

Option 2:
Use a small piece of raw fish or a raw shrimp
Drop a 2 inch by 1 inch chunk of raw fish or a raw shrimp into the tank. As it
decomposes it will release ammonia into the tank.

Hi Ahcash
I would leave the fish piece in the tank. That is what is producing the ammonia levels in your tank and that in turn will start your biological nitrogen cycle. You will start to see nitrate and nitrite readings soon.
No need to take it out, since you have no fish in the tank that can get harmed by the high ammonia. Thats why it is so easy to cycle fishless.

Definately need to leave it in. The bacteria you are growing need a continuous food source or they will die off. If you take the fish out, that is what will happen and you will have to start your cycle from scratch again.
