Fishless cycle

How much ammonia do I want to add when I am doing my fishless cycle? Right now I am going by the instructions on the front page of the site (5 drops a day, down to 3 when I start seeing nitrites), and I have had ammonia readings consistently at .5 (before the five drops) or 1.0 (after the 5 drops).

Is this enough? And where is that .5 of ammonia going every day? I'm not seeing nitrites or nitrates - though I suppose that just could be the test not picking them up.
