Using borrowed bacteria

My tank (10 gallon, 1 flame tetra, 1 blue gourami, 1 guppy) is in the early stages of its cycle. I decided to speed the process up by adding about a cup of gravel from an established tank. Anyone know how long I should keep the gravel in there? It's hanging in the tank in one of my wife's old stockings, not a wonderful decoration. Thanks for the help.

Re: Using borrowed bacteria

It should stay in there until the cycle completes (no ammonia readings, no nitrite readings, with nitrate readings)

Re: Using borrowed bacteria

I'd leave it there until fully cycled.

What do you mean, not a wonderful decoration? I find it rather fetching? Seriously, I just keep mine there and actually forget about them long after it's cycled. I tend to hide them behind something or another (the tights with established gravel).
