Modifying a ten gallon?

Hi im just wonderin if anyone has removed the black trim that comes with the standard aquarium? Also ive noticed alot of extra silicone that looks tacky and really ruins the potential quality of the tank. I want to replicate a rimless one. So how do i take it off? is it gonna be a problem if i do? Any suggestions would be helpful?

welcome! Well, I wouldn't take off the molding. It may disrupt the strength of the tank. How about hiding the silicone with thin wood, the kind which peels off and can be pasted to the edges of your tank, they come in all kinds of shades and veneers. Also, if you go rimless, there has to be some kind of structural support added, right?
How about the DIY people, they are so clever! good luck

Here's a link from another member who took the trim off his 10g.

Removed Trim

It doesn't say it on the thread but i believe his broke one night due to the trim being off. I don't think i would like to try it on a 10g tank the glass is just too thin.

I am removing the trim on my 200g, it has 3/4" plate glass so i am not so worried and it will have a center brace for stability.

Good luck if you decide to remove the trim and keep us posted.

Hello Gerard. If you'll go to the top left hand side of this screen and click on "fish forum home" then look for the DIY section of the forum you may find some helpful information there. Best of luck and let us know how it all turns out.
