wanting to get plants at the rivers and streams..

hi..Well I want to begin my cold weather projects, one which is aquascaping. What I would really like to do, is take advantage of my Vermont clean water rivers and streams. I would look for rocks, driftwood, and plants. I'm wondering if anyone has done this and what I should avoid? Any advice or links? I have been google'ing this all morning. I'm on a timeline ( a month ) to pick my spots to search and to actually know what I'm doing..

So any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

I have driftwood that was collected from the Hudson River. I still have to steralize it, but it's going in my 150.
