Dwarf Lotus plants and poison

I recently read that Dwarf Lotus plants give off a mild poison...that does not harm the african fish community but can be harmful to South American setups? Anyone else heard anything like that??

Maybe the bulbs are??

Do you mean this plant? http://www.plantgeek.net/plant-104.htm

If so, I have an extremely large specimen with SA fish, and have seen no problems.

Hello Ted. Hope you're doing well. I've never heard anything like that but that doesn't mean it isn't so. I'll be watching too for more responses.

Don't want to scare anyone!!!!! It was just at little factoid and I found it interesting. I'm not worried about it at all but just curious.

It is a mild poison...for survival and can be damaging for dwarf cichlids??
For survival:
I mean it can poison neighboring plants to not grow. Sort of like our black walnut trees....can inhibit growth beneath them.

With our water changes it probably can't get to a high enough level to affect the plants or fish. Sort of like the fish growth inhibitors that they secrete but water changes keep it down.

I searched Google and cichlid-forum.com, and didn't find any confirmation of this. In fact, the only thing I did find was a link to this thread on Google.

Can you post your source? I'd be curious to read it.

my source was only that statement from a senior fish keeper (could be an urban legend). Apparently someone was having problems and moved their Lotus plant.....commented on massive root system. He was told to remove the plant it could be the cause of a fish death. All this is in relation to soft, acid water. I am thinking maybe the sap of the plant.
Anyway I cannot find any other info on this....Just wondering if anyone else has heard of it.
Just curious and will not prevent me from buying any type of plants.
