If it's a planted tank try to avoid species that eat plants. Also large rambunctious cichlids ( ie Oscar's and JD's) like to dig up the substrate and "re decorate" they're tank the way they like it.

Rainbows would be a pretty colorful addition to a planted tank.

Sometimes a single small goldfish can be useful if you don't have much stock in the tank, the high amounts of waste the goldfish produce help fertilize your plants until you add more fish. Once you have more stock, you can move the goldfish out and put several fish in to replace the goldfish without messing with the bioload.

Doing this is called placeholding.

The list can go on and on, but you should be more worried about what type of fish do not get along with plants. Such as the cichlids mentioned as well as barbs. Stay away from those fish. Depending on the plant you want can also determine what type of fish you can have b/c certain fish compliments certain plants. Such as neon tetras/cardinals compliment plants that are light/dark green plants.

Goldfish are fanatic plant eaters so if you want a stunning planted tank they might not be the best choice. Also most of the aquatic plants are tropical and the subtropical temps goldfish thrive at wouldn't necessarily work well.

Neons usually look pretty good in planted tanks and I think most tetras do well in these types of aquariums.
I know silver dollars love to eat plants so I'd stay away from those.

It's a very, very long list you have asked for. It will be easier if you let us know what fish you like/are interested in & then we can go through & let you know what isn't good in a planted tank or will have compatability issues.
Red1313 is 100% right. Goldies will destroy a planted tank in a few days, if that, & they don't handle the higher temps well either.

My next tank (planted) I will be getting a school of Celestial Pearl Danios. Hardy and nice. Rams do well in a planted tank as well as they have lots of hiding places to make them feel at ease.

If you have a few wide leafed plants it might b worth getting breading pair of angels. I've kept breading angels with a few kribensis and a small black ghost knifefish before and they were all perfectly happy... when the angels were breading the kribies hung out at the other end of the tank (55 gal) and as soon as the baby angels were big enough id take to the LFS and trade them for store creditor fish food!

i would recommend neon tetra they are very nice to watch and give out good lighting too.
bandit cory also will be nice to have as they will hide in the plant, shrimps are highly recommend in a planted tank.

My favorite fish for planted tanks are rainbowfish. I have kept them in planted tanks along with apistogramma species, cories, bn plecos, siamese algae eaters, and angelfish and have been really happy with the tanks. I agree with the other above posters though.... if you let us know what fish you like, it will be easier for us to narrow it down for you
