Bricks

Have any of you used or know if using bricks in a freshwater tank is safe after cleaning and boiling/as long is I know they haven't been used around chemicals?

Bricks are fine as long as they're properly cleaned, and as you said you know there haven't been any chemicals. Bricks, rocks, concrete all works. Use your imagination.

You might want to keep an eye on your pH if using cement/concrete bricks.

That is true, variuos types of bricks and cinder blocks have various combinations of lime, calcium, and other buffers that will leach into the water. I haven't come across any that causes any dramatic, major PH swings but depending on what type of fish you have in with them, it could be a concern. As long as the PH is steady it shouldn't be a problem.

I saw a tank somewhere in my surfing that used bricks. Go for it.

I use bricks in my pond to hold up the rock shelves. My sister uses bricks in her pond for the same thing. No problems. I have some bricks that have holes in them - when my goldfish were smaller, they would swim through the holes (they won't fit now). They only thing is to make sure that if you use bricks with holes in, make sure the fish can get out again. Some of my fish were large enough that they could only go through one way - if the brick is too close to the side, the fish may not have room to turn around and get back out.

Great info all, I want to use them for a shelf thing I have going in the tank. Im sick of the way it looks-need a change, I will try out bricks with the slate I already have in there.
