Plants for a 5 gallon tank

Hey all,

It's been a long time, I'm in need of some advise about 'aquatic aquascaping' (whoever came up with i love that term lol) anyway back on the subject. I have a 5 gallon tank and I get realitively high ammonia during non water change periods; I know plants can help with this I am looking up some and I need to know the requirements for them (Lighting, hardness, and suppliments just to name a few) also suggested tank size as well.

I'll post links right below the name of the plant that has a picture.

Alternanthera reineckii

amazon Sword

I was also thinking about some Crypts the redish colored ones I was also considering Java moss as well but i'm not too keen on it with a submerged intake for my tank anyway I look forwards to hearing from you guys thanx,

Never tried the first plant but the description on the website tells you that it requires high lighting (and therefore it requires CO2 as well). I've tried Amazon Swords and they can do pretty well under medium lighting (mine are growing under 1.73 WPG and without CO2). The first plant probably won't survive under medium lighitng and without CO2, but the second one should . If you're considering a low-light tank without CO2, these plants are good choices: Java Moss, Java Ferns, and Anubias. Vals, Crypts, and Swords are medium-light plants that can do pretty well too (without CO2).

Anubias are they softer plants or more stiff like leaves?

Anubias have beautiful firm/thick leaves varying in size, depending on the Anubias species. Over time, Anubias grow many leaves which makes the plants look quite lush. I love Anubias because they can grow and thrive even in very low light. They virtually require no maintenance, save the daily dose of whatever the light you may have. Or at least it has been so in my personal experience. Another plus for Anubias is that thanks to the firmness of their leaves, they're not that easy to break/destroy as is often the case with other more delicate plants.
