Making a tank look big?

I'm going to set up my 55g aquarium soon. I want to aquascape it so it looks big. Any tips?

Is it a planted tank (real or artificial)? If so, one thing that always makes a tank look bigger to me is the way the plants are arranged. if you put the shorter plants in the front of the tank and taller ones in the back, it can look really nice. Try to arrange your hardscape (rocks, driftwood, etc.) toward the middle of the tank... not the center, I mean the middle front-to-back. I try and use the rule of thirds as far as placement side to side.

*edit* here are a couple of 55 gal aquascapes I've come up with in the past (although I no longer keep a 55). It's a difficult shape to aquascape as compared with a 75, which is wider front to back. Hope this is helpful.

Oh, I forgot to say that I'm going to be keeping fancy goldies in there. I don't know if that helps.

I think I'm going to use fake plants. Maybe a few real ones and mostly fake.

Ooops! I had actually seen you post that and then forgot.

I think the same would apply to fake plants as what I posted, if that makes sense.

slope the substrate so its quite a bit higher in the back. it gives the perception of more depth

if you are going to have a background, you can stick it to the wall instead of the tank itself, it makes the water look deeper.
