Sea Glass? (lake glass)

I was early for work today and decided to go to the beach that is right next to my work (Lake Michigan) and as I was walking along the beach, and looking for cool rocks for my tank I saw something that looked really familiar...

Sea Glass! (lake glass )

I was wondering why there were so many pieces, but then I figured that since it has not been above 50 degrees since the September, people don't go to the beach as often, and therefore don't take the sea glass.

I came home with a little treasure! and I want to see if I can add them to my tank safely? just to be on the safe side.

Thanks!

It is glass that broke, fell in a large body of water, and was smoothed by rocks, (salt if its a sea) and sand until it looks like a jewel. By that time it becomes valuable and depending on the color very expensive if you find them.

Hi Alessa
You've got some gorgeous pieces there! Nice find. I would think they'd be safe to use after proper sterilization.

What a nice find! I have a few pieces of sea glass in mine that I collected when I lived in Myrtle Beach.

Ooh, I really like sea glass, if they're not sharp (you can take sandpaper to them I think) they're pretty safe.

I've learned something new. I will keep my eyes open for Seaglass now. It must take a long time for the glass to smooth out like that. Thanks for the pics Alessa

hate to bust your bubble: because i collect sea glass on a daily basis i've tried some in the tank. if you're looking for it to look shiney and cool, it aint gonna happen. imo it looks very dull in the tank. just my opinion. the stuff IS gorgeous on its own.

Aren't they awesome? thanks for the comments my friends.

Yup, I was so lucky to find those! since like I said, not a lot of folks go to the beach with temps below 50!

Ever heard of "Glass Beach" its on the island of Kauai. It is quite beautiful. All of the sand on the beach is actiually glass from a dump that was there a long time ago. The surf actually tumbles and smooths the rock. Kinda sad...but pretty!
