Coconut shell

I've seen members that have half a coconut shell in their tanks for like a little cave..I saw some at Petsmart but they are for crabs..Are these the same ones that people put in their tanks...I just want to make sure it's safe to stick in the water.

are these what they call the "T-Rex Dome Home"?. If so, they are made from coconuts and are safe to put in. You can get a coconut from the store with the dried husk (available?) clean the exterior and cut in half then microwave to remove the meat, cut to whatever size you want and place in the aquarium. Though of course if you don't like tanins you'll have to boil it or leach it.

The shell of the coconut has micro-pores that makes a great surface for nitratifing bacteria to develop colonies, it's perfectly okay to add it to your tank so as long as you take the necessary step mentioned by lew2000

Yes, that is what I have. I have java moss tied to the outside and am waiting for it to attach so I can remove the fishing line. Currently I have gravel scraped up under it so that my fish cannot get inside and get tangled on the fishing line.

If you try to attach anything to the top you'll have a devil of a time. Rubber bands are hard to keep on. Staples don't penetrate the shell.

Sorry for not just saying "yes" and submitting the answer. I've had coffee.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it..They were pretty cheap and make a perfect cave, I was going to put the java moss on mine too...I saw in the LFS display tank where they were trying to get some kind of beautiful moss to attach to rocks they use the same material that is used in wedding veils...You can get it anywhere...Anyway it worked awesome and fish can't get stuck in it, they said that is the only thing they use..they just wrap the rock and the moss all together.

it would be really neat to put java moss on the inside of the coconut and have a soft place for them to rest
