Those cool-looking rocky background things that go INSIDE the tank....

I kinda want to get one for my 29gal. Does it take away alot of water space? I'm planning on 6 zebra danios, 6 neon tetras, and three platies... Would it still be fine?

I've seen them used for pandoliums & terraniums, but not in an aquarium. I know they do stick out a bit, not sure how much space they'd take up though.

They are called 3-d backgrounds...It just depends on wht kind you get..Some do take up allot of room but create caves and hiding for your fish so it's functional as well as looking good. Here is a link to some I was looking at for my mbuna tank....This is their Gallery

So do you think I would be fine getting one? I don't want to have to restock my tank just because of the lack of water space or something...

i have been loohing to get something like this for my discus tank as well. My only condern was either diatoms growing where i couldn't get at them, or possibye some bad type of algae growth in the crevises. Red1313 recomended Otto's for this problem - which is what i am going to try. And because they are made out of foam they should be easy to size - and not add much stress/weight to the tank.

The aqua terra web site says 3d take up 6"-12" of space. The amazon tree is 12" at the base.

They also have slimline types that take up approximately 1" in the tank.

My friend has one and i would say they take up about 1" of space at the back of the tank, i think your stocking would still be fine

Okay. Do you think a couple of ottos/cories would fit in there too? Because that would be a great place to put them if my betta plan doesn't work. (My mom still hasn't decided I could have a betta in my 10gal, but just getting the 29gal up and running makes me one step closer!)

Actually i am going to get the slimline 3D which is only 1" according to what i have read - and attach it to the back glass. Some of the 3D pieces like the Malawi or the amazon tree take up quite a bit of room - the installation FAQ's state 6-12 inches depending upon the piece. Since i have my siphon tubes etc. already hidden by fake plants i don't need to set-up with space from the 3d piece and the back of my tank. I am going to use a non-toxic water based glue (which i have used in other tanks previuosly to attach since my tank is active. If your wondering - going throught the variuos distributors that aqua terra shows, the site "your fish stuff seems to be the best" for me; i live in CA so no tax and the cheapest shipping.

i ordered the slimline - with my tank dimensions, can't afford the space of 6"/12" into the tank foreground. I checked ebay and some of the other sites - this seemed to be the best one?

Just as a reference, the length is the dimension first listed; L x H

I have a 2' x 2' 3D background in my 125 tank. It does stand out 2-6 inches depending on the overhang. Since I started this tank and bought the background at the same time I attached it with an aquarium silicone. It set up overnight and was ready for rock and water the next day. I dont have a problem with anything so far because the water behind the background can move enough. It did lower the pH of my tank a bit and just like with wood it is to be expected. My plecos and other fish love it!!
