Finally got it how I wanted it!

So, after I waited for weeks for a new light for my tank, my plants all died. I decided that I was going to completely redo the entire tank, and this time, I was going to have it look how I wanted it to look, instead of how my partner wanted it to look.

Today, we went out, and bought a new bubble donut, a new "tree roots" decoration that I've been eying up for weeks, and a whole load of new plants. I also bought myself a new Hatchet fish, and he's a gorgeous little guy! (Anyway, just a word to the wise guys - if you have cats, shut them away whilst aquascaping! My two got in my way more than I thought was possible!)

So, two hours later and a whole lot of sloshed water, I finally got everything set up and running, and wanted to share a photo or two of the newly designed tank with you all.

Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated.

that looks great!!! where did you get the "tree roots"?

the only thing i might suggest that's more of a personal preference is maybe a couple of taller plants in the background

Thanks!

I actually got the tree roots at Petsmart. I'd seen them before and loved them, but didn't have the money at the time. They cost me $27 today and for how they look, I figure it's money well spent.

In terms of the taller plants in the background, I have a couple of bunches of Cabomba back there that's not easy to see because of the roots, and so I'm waiting on that to start growing in. I've always had a lot of luck with Cabomba in my tank and it grows like crazy, so it shouldn't be too long before it starts to grow and show itself above the roots hehe.

Yeah, I found that my local Petsmart had moved things around since I was last there, and so when I didn't see the tree roots on the same shelf as the rest of the Aquarium accessories, I thought "Ahh heck, they ran out!" so I decided to go have a look at the fish they had. NOT that I would ever buy my fish from there!

Lo and behold, underneath the bottom row of tanks, were the tree roots! They'd been moved there to free up more shelf space for other stock they want to bring out apparently. They are plastic roots, but there's no sharp edges, and I'm surprised by how real it actually looks! This is one lady who's patting herself on the back right now! Lol.

looks very natural, which i love! my wife and i have looked at that exact decoration many times, but didnt think it looked quite worth the money. you have proved us wrong for sure!

my petsmart has another cool looking root decoration that we have considered, but we avoid it for the same reason, maybe it would be worth checking in on. heres a pic of the one im referring to

I have seen that decoration in Petsmart before but I avoided it because of the plastic plant attached to it. One of my pet peeves with aquarium decorations is that so many of them have those plastic plants attached to them, and they're one of the things I just cannot stand lol.

I have always wanted a natural looking tank, but find that driftwood can be expensive. I was worried that the tree roots wouldn't look quite as natural as driftwood does, but once I got them in, got the plants around them, and the water had settled down after the partial water change, I just loved the whole effect! So, it seems, do my cories lol.

i had a similar set up. and i got some of those underwater lights and siliconed them into the hole in the tree roots and pointed them up so they lit up the bubbles. it was pretty awesome looking. had a green and blue.
