I bought a set of fake plants from wal-mart (pennplax) I believe was the brand. They were specifically aquarium decor so I wasn't too worried about them... Unfortunatly I have found a slight problem with them.
They do not react well to aquarium medication. A few days after I began treating my tank for the mystery bacteria with tetra-cycline I noticed that the water was turning a funny color. I figured that it was due to the meds and didn't worry about it. Well now I know the truth, the purple plant appears to be leaking dye. My whole tank is full of raspberry coloured water. the foam by the filter is even purple.
Just a heads up about "cheap" plants.

So do I. However the purple water doesn't seem to be hurting anyone.

wow, i hope none of that is toxic! it shouldnt be since it's being used in water, but you never know.....

Wow thanks for the heads up a bunch of my plants are from there so I will watch, so far I haven't had any problems with them yet...Here's hoping and hope you get your tank straightened out.

Think about the benefits if your fish are alright then your tank is rasberry colored and i think that is awesome, but always keep in mind that the color dye coul be poisones... sorry i was trying to look at the bright side

I was just reading on DrFS about Maracyn-TC tetracycline (think my new cherrys may have columnaris) - under the 'more information' tab it states:

Although that plus the plant together...must have been a really interesting colour

Oh the TC did the usual discoloration but the foam definetly had purple layers in it. And I mean purple.
