aquascaping styles, what do the fish like?

Hi all, I am slowly pulling together decorations from clearance racks and my old tank fro my upcoming new tank, and I have to clashing styles going for this tank at the moment. the first one being the psychedelic (spelling?) neon gravel and fluorescent plants etc. which weirdly enough I lean towards and is what I have used in other tanks in the past. the second style being natural stone/pebbles (larger than gravel) green plants and driftwood. now I will ask the stupid question, which do the fish like better? it really doesn't matter to me what the tank looks like in a room or anything. I have just accumulated stuff more on the neon side. so do the fish really care? we're talking tropical here, no goldies. thanks again! -fishlover78

really I dont think that actual color matters, as long as they have their hiding places and room to swim.

Although I do know that sometimes a light color of substrate makes some fish nervous, because it makes the tank seem bottomless

The fish, actually have their own preferences. They are more comfortable in their 'natural' environment. The closer you can get to their natural surroundings, the more they thrive. Just as keeping schooling fish in schools, the same goes for their surroundings.

You can try your own experiment to test that. Put half of the neon decor on 1/2 of the aquarium.Place the natural decor in the other 1/2 and see which side they stay in the most. You should see a definite preference,to which they like better.

Fish like natural-looking environments better. It will make them feel at home and more comfortable and contented in an unnatural environment. I once set up an artificial-looking aquarium and somehow I felt bad about keeping fish in an alien environment. I then changed it into a natural-looking tank and I felt contented. The main objective in aquarium keeping is to stimulate or mimic an environment for the fish to live in. It's up to you, but I recommend the natural theme more as it looks more pleasing to the eye and shows the viewer something that is not usually seen in the wild. It's like having a chunk of nature in your living room!

Good luck!
