265gallon update

Good morning. I just finished my first filter floss change in my 265g. I don't depend on my floss for biological purposes. I never have. I have tons of other media for that purpose. For me and my tanks the floss catches the waste that I feel needs to be removed to keep my readings in tact. The tank was set up 8/29/09 All is well 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 5 nitrates, no blooms. I change my filter floss in all of the filters (my 26g too) every 5 days. (I do some things differently than others; more information can be found in my blog if you're curious, with details to my madness)

I'm preparing my 26g that houses my 2 juvie Bloody Parrots to match the pH and temperature in my 265g so I can transfer them over. The temperature is perfect, matching the temp in the 265g but my pH in the 26g is a bit higher than the 265g. So, I'm going to mix 1g of distilled water into 4g's of my tap well water (my tap has pH so high it's off the charts). So when I do my water change in the 26g on Saturday it should lower a bit within a few days and then I can transfer my babies over I want my pH in the 265g to match the 26g or to be just a tad bit higher. My rule of thumb is you can move a fish from a low pH to a high pH without much problem (as long as it's not a rediculous difference) but you can't take a fish from a high pH to a low pH without fatalities. (from experience and information I've read over the years).

My plan is to move the juvies (once everything is matched) while they are hiding in their pot bellied terracotta urn. (pictures in my profile) I'm going to lift the urn out, plugging the little hole at the bottom with my finger and covering the large opening with my hand and place the urn into the 265g letting them swim out when they feel comfortable. I think this will be a lot less stressful for my little guy and girl. I'll leave the urn in there for them to call home.

Once I see everything is matched as close as I can possibly get it, I'm going to run to Petco and see what fish they have that I want. I want 4 more Cory's and or Red Hook Silver Dollars and Striped Silver Dollars. I will probably have to drive to where I bought the tank (LFS an hour away) to get the Silver Dollars that I want. I'll quarantine them for a month and then switch them over to the 265g as well. Then repeat the process until I have my 265g stocked the way I want it. I want my new fish (Cory's) first ready to go into the 26g before I make the move. I will transfer the Bloody Parrots before I add the Cory's. By doing so this will keep me from losing my cycle in the 26g tank. I'll continue to use the 26g for quarantine until the 265g is stocked. Then I'll restock the 26g with something, not sure what.

Any thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated!
Ken
PS (everything was transferred over from my 155g to start this tank. I don't want anyone to get confused about cycling)

Hello BB. I've been waiting on pictures simply because my tongs haven't arrived for me to get the back of the tank planted. They have been shipped
I'll have them up before too long!
Thanks again!

I guess I can be patient a little while longer, then. I know it'll be worth the wait!

I'm glad your tongs shipped.

I post things before I am done with them. I know people always ask for pics in the first post. Wow that is a lot of gallons. Maintaining everything must be fun! I like it.

Thanks! It won't be too long for pictures.
I took a nice comfortable chair and ottoman from the screened porch upstairs and put it in the fish room. Now Gabby (kitty) and I can sit and watch the fish in peace Too, I've been moving my fish "whatnots" in there as well. Some on the walls, some in the window seals. I put an old chest of drawers in there that will hold the 29g tank that I use to pre-filter my water for water changes (w/c). It's in the "L" shaped section of the room by the entrance door. I'll pump the water from there to the 265g .

When I drain the water from the 265g for w/c's I'll use the bucket (my orange 5g) the first time so I can mark the water level on the tank (as close as possible). Water changes after that will be drained via the "drain hole" .

Hi Ken
Ive missed a lot of posts lately. .and just realizing that your new tank is now up and running and has been so for the last three days. ( ive got to get into the forum more often..)
I love your idea on how your going to transfer the baby BRP's. That is exactly what I did when I moved my guys from the 55 to the 125. Rather than stress them out by using the net etc, I know they would hide in their terra cotta pots if I tried to net them. I transferred them the same way hahah.. ooo it was so funny. I plugged the holes with my fingers and put my other hand over the top so that they wouldnt get scared and try to jump out. When I did that, and put the pot into the new tank, they just ventured out and were not stressed at all. I knew they loved their new home.
How are your adults doing? I will have to check out your blog to see how the adults adjusted to the new tank.. ooo I know they must love it! All that space.. and new things to explore!
Best of luck and look forward to the photos!

Hello Kate! LOL Great minds! Need I say more? (just teasing)
Thanks for the feedback. Everyone is doing "great". I have to say I'm very proud of all of them. They made themselves right at home immediately.

Hi Ken
They really do make themselves at home rather quickly lol.
Even when I do a water change my 4 will go hide in a corner, bottom up head down in a defensive posture. But once its all done... they go back to their old selves as if nothing had happened. Ooo at one time when I had my hand in the tank one of them swam near, and ran into my fingers, I have to say, those dorsal fins on them are very sharp and when they are nervous and put that dorsal fin up.. well, now I know why, it can do some damage for sure. They appear so soft but quite the opposite, very barb like. Since they cannot bite, its good to know they do have some defenses, other than butting another fish with their head lol.. My guys can be such brats hahaha....

My adults don't mind me being in the tank at all Kate. I usually have to ask them to move while I clean their glass. They don't listen so it takes me a while! lol

Hi Ken,
I'm glad to hear that your tank is set up and doing well. I would love to see pics. I always leave my filter floss in the filter and just rinse it in tank water every couple of weeks. I thought about changing it out weekly like you do, but I think that I am going to wait until I upgrade to canister filters and I have room for more biological media. I hope everything continues to progress nicely for you.

After beginning my 55 gallon, the thought of a 265 gallon tank completely astounds me in every way. I'm mucho impressed I know it's silly in comparison to your needs, but I've decided to special order some tongs, too; I hate wet arms. And I promise I'm not going to say a word about wanting to see you-know-what ...I do believe it's gonna be worth the wait!

Thanks Ilovee I just did a tracking on my tongs and they aren't due to arrive until Tuesday! Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll arrive today. Time to do some water changes in both tanks.
Have a great weekend!
