Gift I Received

Good morning. I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

I was given a wonderful gift from one of my neighbors up the road. He and his girlfriend gave me a 6 foot piece of driftwood that they found here in the creek. "Awesome" to say the least. (I'll post pictures of the wood later on) It is completely dry. (well it was dry) "Chef" decided to pressure wash the tile floor in the new aquarium room while he could and it's greatly appreciated So I asked him to pressure wash the driftwood too. (no soap or chemicals, just water) It's such a beautiful piece. Pressure washing it removed all of the cooties that would have been floating around the tank

Hopefully it will be a wonderful addition to the new aquarium. We'll see. If not, then it will still look great in the room.

More to come soon!

Sounds like that would be an awesome centerpiece for your tank. It is almost impossible to find a decent piece that would be suitable. I always keep a lookout in my travels.

My plan at the moment is to tie the wood to two pieces of slate (one on each end) using fishing line. I'll keep the fishing line taught so the wood is actually touching the rocks so no fishing line will be exposed that the fish might hurt themselves on. There is no way for me to pre-soak it so that it sinks when I put it in the tank.

Another option...I have to 14" terracotta columns that the fish currently swim through. They are large enough and heavy enough to insert each end of the wood into the column and keep it from floating up. (still pondering on this idea).

Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Ken when we need to sink a piece of wood we drill through flat pieces of rock and use stainless steel screws to hold it on to the wood. Then we hide the rocks with substrate or plants. Works really well and you don't have to worry about it shifting if it's bumped.
And yes we need pics

Thanks for the help guys. Carol what a good idea. I'll try and drill through some flat slate rocks that I have today and see how things turn out. I would never have thought of that.

LOL Tony.

Lorabell, I'm ordering the tank on next Monday Aug 10 and I should have it in hand on Friday the 14th Yeah!!! Keeping my fingers crossed.

The DW sounds fantastic, Ken and will look wonderful in the tank. I would go with Carol's idea on grounding the DW. With a piece that size, Im not so sure that those coluums will keep it from floating up. Ive got a pretty long piece of DW in my 6 ft tank that is almost as long as the tank and had to keep two large quartz rocks on top of it for awhile now, and its still not able to stay down by itself yet. But they sure do look great in the tank. I forgot to ask...
are you using sand substrate in your new tank?

Thanks Kate! I'm going to take your advice and Carols advice on the DW. I'm attaching it to a large piece of slate with lag bolts and then I'll have room on the slate itself to add additional rocks. So hopefully it will stay on the bottom. LOL (I'll remember the quartz too)

As for the substrate I'm going to use the same river rock that is in my aquarium now and just adding more to it.
Thanks Kate!
