Hi Butterfly - the images are no longer valid, any chance you can re-upload them? I'm curious about angelfish and am considering them should my last 2 guppies not survive this darned cycle I thought was finished...

Re: Sexing Angelfish
WOW! and that's the only way to tell? and even then only during a short period when they're in mating season? I'm going to have to haunt my LFS daily waiting for the right time - or at least waiting for them to pair off...
Thanks for re-posting, I'm just trying to make sure I do the right thing research wise.

Re: Sexing Angelfish
When they are spawning it's really apparent who is who. I posted a video at youtube of one of my pairs spawning
Heres the link for the vids. It says jagxl01 under them (hubbys account, my pics )

That's how I've sexing mine too...but I find my males seem to have a rounder forehead compared to the females which seem to be a slope. I have been right so far.

Re: Sexing Angelfish
I hear that the male has the bump on the forehead just above the eyes, and the female is smoother and rounded. Tho it is one way to identify the gender, its not always reliable.

Re: Sexing Angelfish
Sorry, this is a little but I would really like to know and didn't feel like starting a new post. Is it just me or are the elongated pectoral fins a blueish color when the fish is sexually mature?

I'm not sure Tom. All I know is that the mom of my Angels is a blue-blushing type, so maybe this is where the blue color in my Angels' fins comes from.

Re: Sexing Angelfish
I really don't think color has anything to do with determining angelfish gender

It's not gender, it's the sexual maturaty(?).

If I understand correctly, your asking if sexually mature angelfish display a blue color on their fins right?
My Koi, Marbles or Black Lace didn't display any blue any where on their body and they were all sexually mature.
But whatever color your angels are those colors will be more vivid when spawning.

I haven't seen it in my angels when I just look at them, I have to take a pic of them and then I see it is like a reflection from the flash. I've also noticed you can't see it in young angels.

So would I be right in saying that young Angelfish are practically impossible to figure out which is male and which is female?

I think the males have a bit more of a 'bump' just past the snout than the females, but I'm not sure how young they can be for that method.
