Hi everyone! I've never kept angels before and the other day I adopted 2 from a local guy who is moving. They aren't in the best of shape as you can see. I think they were housed with other kinds of cichlids. I've kept africans and discus before but not angels so I don't have a clue what kind they are. Please help me ID them. Sorry pictures are not the best but hopefully it's good enough to ID them.

Hi there -
Poor guy's almots got eaten to pieces by the other fish ! Glad you gave them a good home.
They could be Koi, with out much orange or Gold Marbles, apear to be standard fin but, once the fins grow back out
that could change.

One more question, would their damaged fin ever grow back nicely again? I would really like to see those long fins on them just as if they were never nipped.

Ya, mine beat each other up and the fins grow back, though mine are a mated pair but yes they will grow back fine.

They look to be Koi angels, with those ragged fins they need extremely clean water and water temps at About 78F and lots of peace and quiet
Watch for fin rot to set in. It was really nice of you to take them in

I have them now on a 25g tall (bare tank) just by themselves and after a day they are already settling in very well. The temp is around 78 and I also put just a little salt in there to help the healing process on fins. I sit in front of the tank to watch them and they also stay in front looking calm and feeling comfy in their new home. I'm starting to love these fish as they go near the surface everytime I come near the tank. They seem to wait for me to drop something in there. I think I'll wait for maybe 2 weeks before putting them in their permanent home. I can't wait to see them in a well planted community tank and see how they react with the other tank mates.

yeah, they're definitly koi... very pretty. I bought one a while back that was pretty beat up, and his tail grew back in about 2 weeks...

Update... moved them in the main tank last night and today we saw eggs on the plant leaf. I don't know if it's fertilized but they look like they are doing the right thing, taking turns blowing and fanning the eggs.

Hopefully they have good parenting skills.

Thanks. Her fins are coming along very well. Here she in the big tank. I don't know if you can see clearly the worst parts but it's really looking great. I'm so happy to see how quickly she recovered and I can tell she is happy in her permanent home.

Looking good I can't see any ragged fins except for the top fin being still a bit ragged. But the Angel will recover quickly, I'm sure. Sometimes an Angel of mine will have a split fin here and there, and it heals very fast (literally 2-3 days, and sometimes even only 1-2 days). The most important thing is to keep the water clean.

I have on a couple of occasions noticed a split fin on one of my angels that were healed within 2 days. In fact I about freaked out earlier this week because I noticed one had a split that ran half the length of the fin! All better now, though.

No need to worry they'll come back. Mine on occasion have sometimes lost a piece of there arms,that's what I call them,lol, and they came back looking better then ever. Good luck and BTW that female looks exactly like a few of mine. Sisters
