Top of angelfish looks like it's burnt/tanned...

Hey all, first time posting here. All of a sudden this afternoon both of my angelfish look like they got a tan at the beach. It's only from their eyes up through the dorsal fin. I was wondering if this could be a problem or them just growing and gaining a different color. They are eating just fine, actually one of them is a little fat (could that be a problem too?). They eat flakes, crisps and freeze dried brine shrimp. I feed the pleco half an algae wafer each night. I attached a picture, but it doesn't show the coloring so well.

10 Gallon tank:
1 standard pleco
1 neon tetra
1 red tetra
1 cherry barb
3 zebra danios
2 angelfish

Tank has been set up for at least 2 months. We use Stress Zyme, Stress Coat and Prime with water changes once a week. AquaClear 20 filter. I can't tell you the chemistry at this time as the glass vile test tube broke

Hi! I want to welcome you to fishlore!

I don't really know anything about angelfish, but I'm sure someone will come by and help you out.

Good luck and I hope it isn't anything serious!

Welcome to FishLore
The forum seems rather quiet tonight. Like Elvis above, I don't know about Angelfish in particular however, there are potential problems with your tank that may cause the problem you're having.

Is it possible to have your water tested and post the readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?
Stress Zyme is a bacterial additive that claims to help cycle a tank. However, it doesn't contain the correct bacterias that process the ammonia and nitrates. I'd venture to say your tank isn't cycled and suggest you stop using it.
Keep a close eye on your water parameters, and do daily water changes when you start having ammonia readings and continue that until the tank is cycled. Your readings should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites with some (5-10) nitrates.

Your tank is over stocked.
Your pleco should be in at least 55g's. They get really big and produce much more waste than a 10g can handle.
Unfortunately Angels don't belong in a 10g either. It's recommended that one have at least 20 gallons and need a tall talk. Since they grow to be about 6" a peice, I wouldn't put 2 in a 20 gallon. Having them in too small a tank will cause their growth to stunt and deformities.

Your other fish are schooling fish and would do better with others of their own kind, but again 10g's isn't enough to add any more fish.

I'm sorry this post sounds so negative, I don't mean it to be but these are problems with your tank that you should be aware of.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge about Angels can more more specific about the discoloration you're seeing.

Best of luck!

I don't have the cash to get another test kit right now and I can't seem to find an individual vial for the kit itself. As far as the tank being overpopulated, well I didn't realize when I bought them, but they all seem happy enough, swim around lots and don't have a problem with each other. No one bothers anyone else. With the schooling fish, I did have another neon tetra but he died a week or so after we bought him. But, the neon, red tetra and cherry barb were some of the first in the tank and they school together. The zebra danios school together as well.
The angels seem to be doing fine so I'm guessing it's just some type of slight color change as they grow, but if anyone has any other ideas I'd be glad to hear them. I'll keep everyone updated if anything happens to the angels.

I dunno mine have that sorta thing. My tank isn't overstocked. And my water is just fine. Maybe something genetic?

My angels actually have been more lively lately must be ready to breed already. Unless they start acting different I wouldn't worry too much about it.

welcome to fishlore!!!
Its hard to tell from the pic of your angel, but it does look like a color morph as they grow....but not 100% from the quality of that pic...im more worried about the size tank that its in ...as angels grow, its so important, as juviniles, to have proper tank size ..if their fin get stunted, they dont usually recover from that So hopefully you can find a bigger tank soon.....finding out your water parimeters where you have a common pleco in a 10 gal, is going to be a priority also...they poo a ton and usually can put a smaller tank in total disaster mode very fast.....I hope things get better soon! good luck!~
