| | Fish Bum | New Angel Not Eating: Sick or Adjusting? Hi, added a single golden angel to my community tank with fine parameters and all previous residents long-standing and healthy. He/She/It has been in since Sunday (2 days) and has yet to show any interest in eating.
He's rather shy and prefers to hang out behind a large feature with occasional lazy moves around the tank. He's not being bothered by anyone, but just won't eat.
Should I be worried? (I am). |

| | Moderator | angels take time to adjust to new tanks..usually 3-4 days when ive gotten them..if he/she/it isnt eating after that time, id be concerned.... pH shock is a huge issue with getting new angels...did you acclimate him/her/it for awhile? I hope things look up! and pics when you can |

| | Moderator | Hello Desert. Hope you're doing well today. I 2nd Shawnie's thoughts on the adaptation to the new tank and surroundings and the acclimation procedures being crucial.
Try adding some Garlic juice to it's food as it acts as a food enhancer and immune system booster.
Best of luck and please keep us posted.

| | Fish Bum | Thanks guys(&gals). You two are the best - the backbone of these forums.
I did drip aclimate him - as I do all fish prior to introduction. I didn't quarantine him, but know this LFS very well and have had my eye on the angel tank for months. There's never been any hint of trouble - and upon being asked, the owner assured me that all was well and there'd been no problems with fish from that tank.
Although high for an angel, my ph closely tracks what the lfs has (mid 7 range). Hopefully, he'l come around. He did peck at a few flakes last night, but spat them back out...
I'll follow up.
Thanks again for the input.

| | Fish Keeper | Yes, you are fine with your setup.....agreed, let him adjust and all will be good. Once he is comfortable he will come out with the others. |

| | Fish Bum | Well, day #3 and he's still not eating. To me, he doesn't seem "sick", but I'm no authority on fish in general or angels in particular.
I hope it's just an acclimation thing . . .
Here are a couple of lousy shots. He's a tough subject and I'm a lousy photographer: |

| | Fish Bum | Correction! He's now taking nourishment - specifically freeze-dried brine shrimp. Not much yet, but he's showing interest and some vigor.
Everyone was right. Just another tempermental angel.
Thanks for the advice!

| | Fish Bum | Thanks everyone. I was very relieved to see him coming "out of his shell". He's also moving around the tank much more.
All of a sudden it's as though he just "adjusted".

| | Fish Bum | Thanks everyone, but now I'm not so sure again. He still does not show much interest in food - after a full week now. Thinking that it might help, I picked up a 2nd Gold angel to "show him the way". They're great friends and inseparable. The new guy does what fish do. He eats. Energetically. Right away.
But, the fellow in question, while seemingly OK, just doesn't go after food that much. He might peck at a single flake or bloodworm, but given his size, he is definitely not eating like he should. Compared to the "new" angel, he's positively fasting.
The water is pristine with a Whisper 40, Whisper 60 AND a 5" sponge. Fully cycled with nitrate hovering around 10ppm. At the risk of sounding nonchalant, I'm just going to wait and see.
Thanks again. |

| | Fish Bum | This really is the best "Fish Forum" on the 'net. (And there are a BUNCH).
Folks here never tire of hearing (and helping) others when they're starting out.
For closure on this thread, I'm happy to report that my two angels are both doing fine. They're now enthusiastically teaming up at feeding time and scarfing down every flake in sight. Now the OTHER fish need to be quick on the draw!
In the end, I believe my own instincts helped. I think the second angel helped calm #1 and let him settle in. I guess he would have done it on his own, but (he he) two angels look mighty nice in my sparsely populated community tank.
Thanks all!
<<EDIT: Don't mind the cory, he's hogging the spotlight - as usual. His three bros aren't far away. Trust me. >> |

| | Fish Mentor | They look great!!. Sounds like you did the right thing. Angels are notorious for fasting so you know all is well with the world if they are chowing down now!!. Great job and great pics. Glad he turned around. |
