now where did I mess up

I bought 2 small angels and some guppies and within 9 hours both angels are dead. the last one to die was swimming with his head tworads the top of the tank the guppies are doing great

when I got them home I floated them for about 45 minutes then started to add some of my tank water to the bag about 1/4 cup at a time about 15 min apart then poured some off the water from the bag into a bucket and repeated for about an hour

20 hex
0 amonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.
pH 6.8
temp 80 f

Awwww.....sorry you lost them.

How big were they.....dime size? They are pretty sensitive when they are small. I find they do better when they are the size of a quarter or bigger.

Sorry for your loss, they may have been better in a very tall tank, however at that size it wouldnt've mattered.

I suggest getting a tall tank, and purchasing them when they are slightly older next time

Good luck!

Good morning. Hate to hear about your loss. Sometimes things happen that are beyond our control. Your readings look good. Seems you acclimated them well. According to your aquarium information your tank is well established. Personally I don't see a reason why they didn't survive.

I see that you use AmQuel as one of your conditioners. What type of test kit are you using to get your readings?

I personally cannot keep Angels alive. I lost 6 Angels within 2 days of buying them.

I think I've figured out why they die, I lost about 12 quarter sized angels by adding them into my community tank, it has to do with immunities and pathogens, the angels may be at risk to a disease or virus or w/e that your current fish are immune too, and vice versa, and presto one or the other will get sick, thats why your supossed to quarantine. I just bought 6 1 month old angels and put them in a fresh sterlized tank and they are all thriving, their smaller than a dime atm.

If your hardness is significantly lower than the water they're accustomed to osmotic shock may have done it. It's usually not a problem to move fish into harder (usually also more alkaline) water, but softer water can be fatal to sensitive fish and inverts like shrimp.

Maybe your tank has a high salinity level? Guppies love salty water... although Angels die in them..

Also, if you soaked your bag in the water for 45 min I think that is too long. Most people soak the bag in for about 15-20 min. Other wise the fish will be inside the bag too long and they can get pretty stressed out.

So it would be bad to add salt in a tank with angels in it?

If you add too much, there will be salt poisoning. Just a spoon full will be good enough for your tank.
