Mercy Killing

okay, about 4 or 5 weeks ago my angelfish got attacked by a chinese algae eater on the head. the angel was separated from the main tank for about 6 days then he looked better, so i released him. he then began swimming upside down the next day. i immediately put him back in the separate net (a breeder net). he got better again about a week later, so again i released.

all was well for 1 day then again he started swimming upside down. i put him in the separate net for a third time. he is now swimming upside down and swimming around in circles. he hasn't eaten in a few days and the wound from the CAE is reopening.

my question is, is there anyway to put him down, mercy kill? because he doesn't seem to be getting better and he looks as if he is in pain.

thanks

The most humane way would be to use Clove oil which is found in the pharmacy section of stores. A few drops will slowly put him to sleep.

Hello Bad Wolf. Sorry to hear about your Angel. To me, I don't think I would care to freeze to death myself. I think it would be just as humane to take it outside and bury it. JMO. Hate you're going through this

Well, only you can make that decision and I'm sure you'll do what is best for your fish

If he's suffering and it doesn't look like there is anything you can do. I've euthanized as a last resort because sometimes you've just exhausted all your options and you don't want to prolong the suffering. I don't recommend freezing for fish larger than small tetras and such. It works quickly with small fish if you get a cup of tank water ready in the freezer, then break the crust of ice on the top and drop the fish in, and then put it back in the freezer. Small fish just immediately go into shock and die quickly. BUT- larger fish won't, and will suffer. I've used the clove oil method for larger fish and it seems to be a peaceful way to go; they just sort of drift off and then you continue to add enough to make the dose lethal. If you're going to do it, you need to get your hands on some clove oil (sold as eugenol at the drug store). After trying it I would never use any other method.
