Angels have spawned...... some questions

Hi all, I have a piar of breeding black angels, they have spwned at some point yesterday (2nd June), I did not witness this taking place, only noticed the eggs when coming to feed them by hand last night as usual butthey were very aggresive towards me (I soon realised why), anyway my question is when do i need to separate the parents from the fry (when hatched) and what is the best food for them, will baby brine shrimp and microworms be sufficient ??

Many thanks in advance

first of all, is it the 13 gallon tank? i would suggest moving everything (fish and frogs) out of it. perhaps you could move the ghost knife and the frogs into the 200 liter tank for now. it's your choice to keep the parents with the eggs or not. you can let them look after the eggs or you can raise them artificially by putting them in a tank with a very slight water current.

my advice on the fry food would be infusoria. this should be fed to them for at least the first 14 days of their life, then move onto micro worms or baby brine. the reason for this in the brine shrimp might be a bit big for them and just remember the exes brine shrimp will grow if no eaten.

good luck

Hi Badwolf

The angels are in a 30 gallon tank by them selves (I have more than 3 tanks in house now, 5) which was purposely bought for them for breeding, so other fish are not a problem to the eggs or fry. The parents seem to be doing a good job of fanning the eggs so shall be leaving them in until fry are free swimming, just unsure wether they are liable to eat them when they are free swimming?? Roughly how long does it take for the eggs to hatch

The eggs will hatch in 3-4 days depending on water temp. When they hatch you will see little tails wiggling(wiggler stage) then in 3-4 more days(free swimming) the fry will be swimming around. You can separate fry and parents at any time. Do not feed the fry until the next day after going free swimming. This allows them to use up their egg sac, The fry can eat freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. With a magnifying glass you can see their tummys are orange if their eating.
Being the first time your angels have spawned they may eat their eggs, or the eggs may all turn white(not fertilized). If they are truly a pair it may take some practice to get it right.
Hang in there and let us know how it goes

Hi scooby, I hope the spawn goes well.
It would be helpful if you could update your aquarium info. This way the members aren't giving you suggestions based on wrong information.
