| It is time to separate them... I bought 4 baby angelfish (2 gold, 2 zebra) about 5 months ago, they are in a 20 gallons tank.
Recently, they have been nipping each other's tails - and now I have to make the conclusion that they are too large to live together and I will have to sell 2 of them. However, I haven't been able to identify their genders, I hope some experienced fishkeepers here would be able to help me with that. |

| great pics! angels can be nearly impossible to sex unless you actually see them breeding, the best thing for you to do right now is to wait for a pair to emerge, you should probably just wait and see if two of your angels start hanging out together and defending a certain part of the tank. a 20 gallon is definitely too small for all four of them, is it a 20 long or 20 high? |

| erm.... i think.... high?
and, they are always nipping each other, except the yellow ones.
I am not quite sure if they are really hanging out together, or just because they are not as aggressive as the black ones... Last edited by Lucy; March 26th, 2009 at 01:53 PM.

| Hi joseph ..nipping is normal at this stage as they are determining whose boss...and also, it will happen even when in the courting stage if they pair up .......if there is no fin damage, id leave them be for now but really look for a bigger tank...if you see two that "hang out together" and kinda seclude the others, those would probably be the 2 pairing..but if all are going at one another, its still being settled as whose who.... at this point, they still arent quite old enough to 100% sex but if you want guesses, I can give you some....id say the gold pair, are possibly a m/f combo...in your zebra's, they look like two girls to me..butterfly can help alot with this also......usually much easier from 7-10 months for me....either way, id see if you can upgrade your tank size before selling or getting rid of any if it were me....the size of the tank they are in could be more of an issue right now than the sex of them....they are truly beautiful tho!! |

| thanks for your reply.
Yes, the tank is a bit too small for them. unfortunately, I don't think I would be able to upgrade my tank, so.... let's hope they would stop nipping each other and pair up as soon as possib le... |

| well if they pair for sure, theres bound to be even a bigger war...with death...and their finnage will be stunted in a tank so small unless its deffinately a high tank..if you post the measurements we might be able to help you with that...a 20 gal regular or long tank cannot handle two a a 20 gal high could.. check out craigslist.org...tons of great deals cheap! |
