nitrite would be extremely toxic to just about any fish, while 40ppm
nitrate would be on the high side, but not lethal.
I'm guessing your filter had very little to do with your fish dying. What are your readings for
ammonia and whichever nitr*te isn't at 40ppm?
And to be the bearer of bad news, in the long run, a 15g tank would not be suitable for 2 adult angels. If you don't have a larger tank you can move them to as they grow, you might be better off not replacing the ones you lost.
