Sudden angelfish behaivor change

ive had my new 29 gallon tank for around 2 months now (probably a bit shorter) and ive got 2 angels (about 2in from head to tail) in there for about 3 weeks (YAY!) along with some cory catfish.

the two angels have been perfectly content and have never shown any signs of agression among each other at all. then today when i came home from work ive noticed that they have been constantly chasing eachother around. one has been staying in its own spot unless is sees (or has been seen by) the other angel, who has not been staying in a paticular spot like the other one. i have seen no damage or real signs of 'fighting'

could they be showing signs of mating? or is is something else?

Hello and welcome to fishlore
I have two angels and had pretty much the same thing happen with mine. When they were small they got along fine. When they started to mature was when the aggression started. One was the aggressor, the other was bullied.
One would try to hide away and was stressed out. When it got bad and the aggressor would not leave the other alone, I had to separate them. They are both almost two years old now and do not share the same tank. They are most likely two males, which may be the case with yours. If it gets bad, like it did with my two, you can end up with an injured angelfish on your hands.
It may be that you will have to end up separating them or finding a new home for one. I tend to advice folks that like to keep Angelfish, to only have one in a tank and not end up having to deal with the aggression that is sure to happen at some point.

Hello CapeKate,
I will be getting a 30 gallon hex shortly and was going to put two angels in there..Not a good idea??..Could you put two in there wait to see if they pair and if they both end up being Male or Female trade one for the opposite sex??..Or still a bad idea. I would hate for one of my fish to be miserable.

Angels stay pretty small for a long time and can do fine with two of them in a 30g. You will have to wait and see what happens whether they pair up or not and be prepared to move one if it doesnt work out. I still have one angel in a 29g tall and its got plenty of room. If you are looking to see if you get a pair it may be better to get more than two, your chances of finding a pair is better that way. But again you would have to find a new home for any other angels once you do end up with a mated pair.

Can I have more then 2 in a 29 Hex tank??..I've gotten very good at finding new homes for fish..I've been doing fish rescues..lol..Don't know how I ended up doing them..but I've rehomed 6 fish so far..that were in pretty bad tanks. I actually enjoy doing it. I could always trade them at the LFS too.

Since they are so small to begin with I see no reason why you cant have more than two in the tank. Maybe you can start off with five of them as long as you have a place to move them to in the future.

Size : Up to 6 inches (15 cm)

Angel fish are curious about their environment and can become very territorial, especially around breeding time. They will pair off and if any other fish tries to enter their territory they will go after them.

They prefer tall tanks over short tanks because of their tall body shape.
