| These are Shawnies angels. Look at the different shapes of their heads. It is becoming more and more popular to sex Angelfish in this way. The first is male and the second is female. Thanks shawnie

| well if they literally saw eggs coming from the top one, I mean the eggs coming out, my theory is totally blown because the top is totally looking like a male comapred to the bottom and it has the same tube LOL ...so much for that hahah |

| First picture is a female, note the enlarged breeding tube. This picture was taken about 5 minutes before they began laying eggs.
Second picture has the male up front with the female in the background. Note the smaller, more pointed breeding tube. |

That's why I don't have a ton of faith in any other method of sexing angels. |

| in general male angels will have longer fins and their extended fins (sorry i don't now what their called) are longer than their anal fin. Females extended fin will be much smaller than their anal fin. Males will be more inquisitive in searching for fry (live bearers) and will show more aggression. |

Females do have as long and graceful anl, dorsal fins. |

| so females have a larger breeding tube? in this case, i think mine is a male, he's only 3 inches tall including fins, does the tube always show or is it only when breeding? |

| How about these two: There's at least 1 female, as they have deposited eggs twice, but they all turned white despite their great parenting.
See their story: Angelfish breeding (w/ pics) |

| Here's my mating pair. The big one on the left is the male, the one to the right is the female.
I have no clue how to sex them, I know this because I saw her place the eggs and him follow behind and fertilize.
And again, the male in front and female in back |

I have a smokey lace and a leopard, both males, whose tubes are always showing. My other angels' tubes sometimes show when their bellies are full. |

| one thing to add different they what everyone has told you that i have read on was that the two fins that hang off there belly, if they split then it is a male if they do not then it is a female. i have three that the fins split and one that does not. the one that does not is my female i have watched her lay eggs and her tube is huge, and the one that does is my male his tube is smaller and he will usually follow behind her to ferilize them |

| Where did you hear that the ventral fins are split on males? I have more than a dozen proven males and not one has split ventrals. So, I'm curious about this. |

| go to google images and type in sexing angelfish and it is right there. they say on a male the fins fork and do not on a female |

| I just looked. And, you are misinformed. Not one site indicated that a forked ventral fin pointed to sex. Every image is pointing you to the breeding tube. Some are even my own images of angels I've kept over the years.
After keeping and breeding angels for 20 years, the only time there were split fins was from illness or from fighting. I even went to all my tanks and looked at my males. Not one has a forked ventral fin. |

I will 75% disagree with the chart. So far I owned 30 + healthy adult angel fish.
1) I have had a larger females than males at times.
2) In 1 of my tank a female also has a bump over her head and she laid eggs today.
3) Smoothed & forked front fin, I disagree. I have both males and females with both the type of front fin.
However, I do agree with 1 point, that is the tube.
The bumb, froked/smoothed front fin & larger body size is completely depend on the gene (where they come from). Last edited by streetdog; December 31st, 2011 at 08:25 AM.

| I agree with Lucky. That drawing has more false statements than truths. You cannot trust everything on the Internet. |
