The angelfish and the Platys will be fine in a 20g (although the angels will eat any fry) Male or female Bettas do not need to be in a tank that size with angels. The Bettas will pick at the angels fins and angels will pick at the female Bettas.

Those 2 species should never be in the same tank. Pretty much certain disaster there.

My male betta, gets along fine with my angel fish. Weird HUH!!!!! Of course he is a very old and very SPOILED, a very sociable guy. Not unless he is doing something behind my back, or maybe the angel fish is. Even my sister in law has an angel fish and a betta in the same tank. Am I doing something wrong? Or RIGHT?

More often than not, the combination ends with one fish or the other having damaged fins or possibly dead. This would be especially true in a 20g tank with two angels, such as the OP has, but there are exceptions to every rule.

It's possible that his angels are peaceful enough that they won't harass a betta, and it's possible that he could choose a betta at random that is peaceful enough to not harass the angels, but the odds are against that. It's much more likely that amongst the three fish (especially the two angels that are already in the tank and already call it home) that one of them will see the other species as an intruder.

Yep!!!!! I discovered my angel fish pecking at my betta. Since reading this forum I decided to keep a closer eye on things. I was expecting the betta to fight back but he did not. He just went into the corner and laid down. I separated them.

So you put Betta in with the angelfish anyways after people told you not to?
Angelfish and Betta come from two different parts of the world with different water requirements and don't go together for many reasons.

No actually the betta, and the angel fish were in the same tank way before I started posting here. Never the less, they are seperated now, and there was no damage.

They can be kept in community tanks. I had one in my tanks for years. Then it died of old age

Sam, Siamese Fighting Fish (betta)

They are able to be kept in with many different types of fishes.

I had one in with my African Cichlids before, and nothing bad happened.

I also had one in my 500 gallon tank with my angels and what so ever, nothing really happened.

I can tell you one thing.

If your hoping to get fighting fishes in with angels. I recommend you get some tetras that are short fins. Because Fighting fishes don't go after short finned fish.

Fighting fish can stay with some angels, just might be a risk. Especially if you have veil tail angels. Since the tails are really really long.

Also as angels get bigger, the fighting fish will tend to go after them more, because when angels get bigger they reach maturity level, and have more um, wavier fins.

So what I'm saying is that You can keep them in with angels, but it is going to be a big risk.

Just b/c it worked for you doesn't mean it's right. What type of africans did you have one with?
Betta have different water parameters than all African cichlids.
You had was luck. My kribs years ago tore apart my betta and he died.
They are not compatible with those fish you had them with.
A 500g tank is a huge space and most people don't have the space.

Bettas are known for harrassing or killing everything in a tank. Keep them out of your community tank...period...that is my advice
