Can I get one?
Hi I'm new to fishkeeping and bought my first tank ( a FLuval Roma 90L) about 2 months ago. I did a fishless cycle and after 3 tedious weeks I got my first fish: 3 Red Wagtails!
I found out from many people I could fit 36" of fish in my aquarium and so I hope to stock it with:
- 1 albino Bristlenose
- 6 tetras (probably neons)
- 2 honey Gouramis
- and my Wagtails (obviously)
By my calculations, and many people checking them, I have around 9" of fish that I could still have and I hope to have an angelfish. Would this be possible?
The dimensions for my tank are 60cm long x 35cm wide x 45cm high.
Would they be alright with the other fish?

I'd go with either an angelfish pair but Angelfish get aggressive in pairs. I think your tank is a 23-25g so an angel with one gouramis might work with the rest of the fish. Make sure you have lots of filtration.

Welcome to Fishlore.
I'd probably go with that list, but leave out the gourami. They can have territorial issues with angels, although sometimes it works.

So I could get an angel but I would have to leave out the gouramis?
Will the angel be comfortable in my tank as I know there is some sort of height requirement for an angel?
Also will they be alright with the neons because some people say they are fine together, some people say they aren't?

I have 2 angels in 2 different tanks. I know one of my angels would get a neon since he tried to get an oto cat. The other angel is fine with pretty much anything I put in there as long as it is about an inch long.

okay so if I get the neons first, let them grow a bit and then get the angelfish it should be alright?

It depends on the personalities of your angels. Some are pretty easy going and some have some real attitudes.
I think angels will be happy as long as they have 30g (US) or more, although they do enjoy tall tanks much more.

I believe your calculations are based on the size of your fish at the moment, not considering the adult size which is what we measure. So with that, you would be overstocked with the fish you are planning. By your measurements you have a UK 21 gal tank,( US gal tank size 25g.)
With those measurements, I do not understand how you can have 36 inches of fish in your tank. If it were my tank, I would omit the Angel fish and Gourami's and go with what you have left in your tank.

On another fish forum, they worked out I could have 36" of fish by working out the surface area available for gaseous exchange as well as the adult size of the individual sp. of fish. I also thought I could only have around 21" of fish but I have been told I can get 36" with that (supposedly better) method.

We go by the 1 to 1 ratio at adult size as well, keeping in mind that it wouldn't be too great for a 20" fish to be in a 20 gallon tank...We also overfilter our tanks. On the angels, we have breeeding pair so they get along fine. They are in a tank that is about 45 cm and they are thriving (and breeding). We also have bristlenose and love them. Just note that they have a high bio load so you have to adjust inches to accomodate them. Good luck.

Ok well this is what I want in my tank:
- 3 Wagtail Platys
- 1 Albino BN
- 6 neon Tetras (or more)
- Another type of fish
I really would like 4 different types of fish, not 3. How many inches would you say I have left and has anyone got any ideas of my 4th fish?

How about just one Gourami...two often create problems anyway.

The problem I have found with gouramis also is that they're apparently not very good for beginners. Instead I think I am going to get:
- 3 Wagtails
- 1 Albino Bristlenose
- 6 neon tetras
- 6 other tetras (lemon or emperor or black skirt or black neon)
I'm a fan of tetras and so I have decided to get two different types of tetra.
I may add to the number of each tetra if I can. Can somebody work out if I can for me? I'm no good at math
I think all those tetras max at around 5cm.

That means you're adding another 12 inches of fish...you'll be very overstocked!

At the weekend I got my albino BN (who i've called max) and 6 neon tetras.
Any ideas on what final fish to get? I would like a mixture of colours in my tank.
Perhaps a betta or a RTBS? Any ideas on these two types?

I have now found out tetras can nip the bettas fins and thinking about it, I no longer want a RTBS. People have said to get pearl gouramis, Kribensis or rams. Any views on these fish and would they be able to fit in my tank?
