hello. i have a koi angelfish. i really need help becuase i have noticed it breathing very fast and its gills are somewhat red. they are not completly. it is a closer to a maroon color. the other fish (+ him) have been breathing very fast but none of there gills are red or inflamed. i can't figure out if i have ammonia becuase i only have 1/3 test solution bottles that i NEED. i have been constantly been doing water changes (25% a day) because i recently had a bacterial bloom. my tank re cycled becuase of that.i was wondering if doing water changes would do anything. please ghelp!

they have also been just below the surface NOT GASPING FOR AIR

Red gills are usually a sign of ammonia poisoning. I would continue to do water changes and add some water conditioner like Prime, if you havent done so already. Daily water changes are a must when you find ammonia present in the water. You must be going through a mini cycle. When my tank did that I had to do daily water changes for about 14 days til the readings were back to normal.
What size tank do you have and how many fish are in there?

kates advice is correct, as well as you need an ammonia test kit...I thought my angels had poisioning also..but turns out I have blushing koi angels....have the gills just turned color? or have you just noticed it? but seeing how yours are breathing heavy, and dont look normal, its probably a spike somewhere...Dr foster & smith's test kits are pretty cheap...goodluck

water change will help in the mean time, until you can get your ammonia test.

Do you have a picture you could post? The possibility of a blushing koi is good if this isn't a new coloration.
