Dealing with Angelfish Agression Toward New Tankmates

Hello everyone,
Yesterday I took advantage of a 50% sale at the aquarium store and finally got myself some baby discus (2in, about the same body size as my angels). I had read that Discus are ok with angelfish, however when i added them to the aquarium my one (marble) angelfish started biting at them and kind of herding them behind a rock in the corner. I have not had any problems previously with this angel being aggressive toward any other fish, even my other (koi) angelfish. I tried giving them some time to settle down, but the angel was still being aggressive so i moved him into a smaller tank by himself. My hope is that if i leave him in another tank for a day or so, when i put him back in the main aquarium. he will believe its a whole new place with new fish and thus wont have such aggressive/territorial tendencies since he would be the "newest" member. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I don't have any experience with your type of fish, but sometimes, a "time out" is just what they need.

I have one angel that is aggressive towards other fish. He has his own 40 gallon tank, I couldn't stand the thought of turning him in for store credit. I had made a deal with myself if I couldn't find at least affordable 29 gallon tank for him by himself by the end of the month he would go to someone else. I lucked out and found it at a thrift store with stand and light. I know he is happy being in his hermit tank by himself, and I know he is being well cared for.

Try rearranging the tank before putting him back in i find it helps with aggressive fish.

Welcome to Fishlore.

I would recommend a larger tank if you want to keep Discus and Angels.. more room will make it easier for them to setup territories and get along.

For now, you could try moving your angels into a large container with tank water. Then rearrange the tank and acclimate them back in. They should feel less territorial then, but watch for aggression from them or possibly the Discus.
