Angelfish compatibility?
Hello all,
I want to add 2 pairs of platinum angelfish to my community tank consisting already of several varieties of tropical fishes. I have neons and rummy noses and i was wondering if the angels will eat these 2 in the long term... Please help... Thank you...

Depending on how big your angelfish are when you get them. Neons are risky, they don't get very big. Rummy noses would be ok.
What other types of tropical fish do you have?

I think those fish could be at risk if the angels mated and viewed them as a threat, but I think that also depends some on the temperment of your angels.

Hi allie and Cobettacouple, thanks for the tip i already went and bought 2 pairs of them today... They seemed to have settled in quite well... Only time will tell ... I have a juwel rio 180, dimension is 101 x 41 x 50 cms. Its a fairly new set up and i already have about maybe 70 fishes consisting of 8 german and gold rams, 2 kribs, 4 zebra loaches, 1 clown loach, 1 cory, 2 algae sucker, 8 black phantom tetras, 10 buenos aires tetras, some leopard and glowlight danios, 4 harlequin rasboras left, 5 serpae tetras, 3 cherry barb, 6 odessa barbs, 1 red rainbow, 1 boesemanii rainbow and 6 neon dwarf rainbows... and bout a dozen rummy noses and bout 25 neon tetras... Its over stocked i know but all seem to fair quite well... So i just hope it continues with my new platinum angels...
Thursday, i went to buy bout 10 varieties of plants and that's where i have problems cause i use aquaclay and gravel as substrate and its the first time i'm planting... But the fish love them new plants which are nymphea, ludwigia, cabomba piauhyensis, echinodorus quadricostatus and grandiflorus, vallismeria, alternanthera liltacin, rotala wallichii and macranda and 3 mayacas. My lighting is 2 x 30W multilux tubes as supplied with the aquarium... So I just hope i have some luck with them plants... I use prodac co2 tablets and leafzone... I thank you very much for the tips and advice and hope you can have a better understanding of my tank in my image gallery... Thanks and ciao...

Wow! I think your tank would be about 55 gallons which i think means.... it is WAAAAAAAy overstocked.... And it is only about 50 days... how are the parameters? Have you had any fish die yet, it sounds like you might...

Hi, yeah its definitely over stocked but i have this illness that makes me buy me buy fishes whenever i go to my aquarium store,lol... I think we all have it ... I had a lot of deaths in the first few weeks like 10 cardinals, 10 harlequin, a few danios, bout 4 rainbows, 3 clown loaches, 2 cherry barbs... But the store recommended me Esha2000 and since using it, i haven't had any deaths at all... I think its a very good product to use if any aquarium is getting problems... I do a weekly water change and test every sunday... I change 1/4 of the tank and the parameters are mostly the same ...
Nitrate 50, nitrite 0, GH 14d, KH 3d, PH 7...
Now, i'm getting worried about my plants cause its my first time... You have a very nice tank by the way and the little suspension tank looks really cool... What is it for anyway?
Thank you...

Hi irvan If I haven't said it before, Welcome to Fish Lore
I seriously hope this illness of yours extends to buying tanks also.
I took a little (ok a lot) of time and added up the number of inches of fish in your tank. Keep in mind the general rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon of water.
So far, I came up with 243" of fish in a 54.7US gallon tank....I didn't include
the 4 zebra loaches, 2 algea sucker1 red rainbow and 1 boesemani rainbow, because, frankly, I got tired of looking them up. (If my calculations are wrong, please, please someone correct me!)
I can tell by the amount of fish you have that you really love fish, please do the right thing for them and either return most of these fish or buy several more large tanks and separate them.
btw, how can they have room to swim?

Hello Lucy and thank you for the welcome . You are not wrong at all in your calculations and i thank you for your patience cause i never calculated the rule of thumb... I wanted to keep only little tropical fishes as i had parrots before in a smaller tank... the only problem among my fishes is with the Buenos Aires tetras, they are so heavy eaters and grow very big in such a short space of time So i think i might get rid of half of them... Apart from that, all the fish seem to have space to swim... A lot of the tetras are usually stagnant like the black phantoms and my german rams don't really move a lot also... they all seem to have found their own little space... But i definitely need to buy another tank later during the year... Tanks are quite expensive though... and i cannot return any of them fishes cause i love all of them, lol...
I thank you for your advice anyway Lucy and will post a video of the tank soon...
Ciao, Irvin.

Your welcome, sorry it wasn't better news.
Check out FreeCycle.org in your area and also keep your eye on Craig's List, people are always selling tanks and you could get a great deal on a complete set up.
Good luck to you.

Yeah, I understand that you want to buy everything, and we all do, but sometimes you have to stop...
I know you don't need to take the 1 inch rule seriously, and your fish might have room, but if you are planning to keep this tank for a while, which I'm sure you will, you will need more space... Right now you'll have over 9 fish in every two gallons, which I'm sure you can imagine how bad that would be...
Also, your Nitrates should be below 40...
Oh, and were you talking about my breeding tank? I use that to keep my fry...

The 1" rule pertains to the amount of waste that they produced, not the amount of room they have to move around.

I'd recommend using a water conditioner called "Prime" to treat the water with and changing 25-40% of the water daily since the tank is so overstocked, but getting the fish into more tanks is the ultimate answer to the problem.

Hi all,
thank you for all the advices and tips. I'm already thinking to get rid of some buenos aires tetras and some odessa barbs as they're so heavy eaters and getting too big for my tank... I might keep only about 2 pairs of them which i think will be better for my tank... As for my other fishes, i love them too much to think about not seeing them for 1 day, lol...
I already have another smaller tank but i've got 3 silver dollars, 1 needlefish and a yellow electric lab cichlid in it. I don't think i can put any more in it as the dollars are already massive...
As for the Prime conditioner, i looked it up on the internet and it does look really good but unfortunately, i can't get it in my country... I use JBL Biotopol instead which i think does the job...
Peace all... Ciao, Irvin

You have another tank?
But seriously I still do not think that will help that much.
I guess if you would do really frequent water changes, and took very good care of your parameters, you might be able to do it. Your fish would be a lot happier though in a few tanks, with less fish.
