Unfortunately, it seems that there is no way to tell until they breed.
Presuming you can get yourself a male and a female, and presuming you have a large enough tank (20g+, they prefer tall tanks), breeding them is supposed to be pretty easy. I would bet that you would be able to buy a mated pair on Aquabid if you looked.

Sometimes, though not at all a reliable way, by comparing 2 fish of more or less the same size you may notice one having a more obvious 'bump' on the forehead than the other. Males generally have this bump as well as having fully formed fins. The breeding tube, however, i believe to be the best way, but hav'nt had the opportunity to compare them by that yet.

If you have the patience, get yourself six juveniles of roughly the same age. As they mature, they will pair off. Keep the dominant pair, and relocate the rest of them. I'm currently doing this with some Marble Angels. Right now, they are about the size of a 50-cent piece. This is the first time I've attempted this, so I'm not entirely sure as to how long this process takes, but I do know that it can be sped up by maintaining a higher than average water temp (>82 degrees), performing frequent water changes (2 or more times a week), and feeding them protein-rich foods like bloodworms and beefheart.
