Someone gave you a fish without you already owning a tank, or providing one to put it in? What an IDIOT! That fish is going to be poisoned by ammonia for sure, and you having to run out to buy an entire setup to put him in and the stress of being in a tank as it cycles may very well kill it!
That's no friend.
According to the angelfish info page: http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Angelfish.htm the fish should have at least a 20 gallon tank. You'd also need a freshwater test kit (API is the preferred brand, and strips are too inaccurate to bother with), heater (Visi-Therm Stealth), water conditioner (Prime is a good option), food, filtration system (if one doesn't come installed in the tank), and a handful of other things.
If you don't have a well-supplied fish store within a few minute drive and well over a hundred dollars of free money in your pocket or bank account, I'd see if you could return the fish to the store it came from...

well, i would do things differently than hatchet suggests. i would buy a tank of about 30 gallons, with a filter for roughly a 90g tank. (and a heater and other supplies - make sure water conditioner is among them!) i would ask my friend that gave me the angel to donate also some media from his filter... if that were impossible, i would get some bio-spira immediately... short of that, as a last resort, i would use a carbon-ammochip blend in the filter. i would NOT give my fish to a LFS to kill.
also, even though the tank is big enough for other fish... do NOT get more fish yet.
and, as hatchet said - do some reading! lots and lots of reading!

I'm not trying to sound overly harsh or mean...but pets should NEVER be impulse buys, ESPECIALLY fish. Fish need to be planned for and prepared for well before they ever come home.

First Fish Ever beautiful angelfish
A friend just gave me an Angelfish as a present! I've never had a fish so basically I have no idea what to do! It's silver and has gold and black stipes over the head about the size of a dollar coin... Please help need info ..well about everything tank, water, food help. lol please please hurry before it dies....it's still in the bag
p.s I'm a college student and it's just one fish....so the tank doesn't have to be big or expensive...does it??
My friend is from out of town and won the fish in a street fair while he was visiting...since he couldn't take it on the plane he gave it to me....

Hi!
Well, what's your plan? Your lucky you didn't end up with a Clownfish or Blue tang (Dori) - that would have cost several thousand! My new plan is to get some BioSpira, a 20-30gal tank, a filter and heater for it, a thermometer and a liquid water test kit, NOW! Go on, that angel won't last long in that bag.

Oh, he can't live long in that bag, the oxygen will run out.
Is there something you could put him in temporarliy?
Gosh, I'm even thinking about a clean plastic storage bin at least for right now. (Don't put him in plain tap water, you'll need to use a water conditioner.

Since this is really an emergency, otherwise, I would never suggest it.
Put the bag in a large glass and open the bag so air gets in, drape the ends over the outside of the glass so it doesn't slide in.
Does anyone think this will work while she runs to the store?
(sorry if this is a dumb suggestion)
