Hi!

Lucy - you genious! That would work - one flaw though... She'll need to run over to the store to get the water conditioner...

while you're shopping, open the bag, or put it in a very clean container (can have absolutely no soap residue)... but run out and get the basics immediately! a 30g tank, a 90g rated filter, a heater 100w?, and some basic flake food for tropical fish (omega one if it's available), water conditioner(i like Novaqua, others here recommend Prime, but Prime can't be used with bio-spira), bio-spira (if they have it) and a net. you can get everything else later, even rocks and decorations...

It comes in short bursts. lol

Yes on the fish bowl and his water, assuming you are going to go get a tank, filter, heater and water conditioner that is suitable for him now.

Water condidtioner is used to take the chlorine out of tap water. Chlorine will kill your fish.

If you're talking about the links HatchetHaven gave you, yes, it is a lot of reading, you'll be glad you did.

she can use the same water, if the surface is exposed, that'll help.

Hi!

He is not going to die. (Well, he is, eventually. But so do we all!?)
Not if you wizz of to your LFS and grab up the items I said before (AquaSafe, Stress coat and Prime are all great examples of water conditioner). If I don't see that little green dot telling me your still online within half an hour he'll live. Now go! I'll be here tomorrow, around the same time if you have any other questions.

Bye, see you soon, and glad your trying to give your fish a great life!

Hi Hatchet,
I can understand your consternation here. Kosami posted the same question in four different places! Makes answering the same question with the same answers already posted in another thread kind of silly eh?
Well if Kosami gets back to the forum, Id love to know how her Angel fish is doing. I also wonder how long its been in that bag. The nitrates must be sky high by now and no oxygen either. I dont see how it can survive.
A 20 g tank may be ok for now, but it wont be long before she will need another size IF it survives this trauma. A 29g tall is recommended for Angel fish. Plus starting if off in an uncycled tank is not a good idea either.
BUT that said.. I have to congratulate her on trying to do her best for the fish that was given to her unexpectedly. Shes going to go out and spend a lot of money and time for this fish that she didnt even know she wanted in the first place. And I give her credit for trying to do some research and showing up at Fishlore for help.

Good luck at the store. It's so nice to see you want to do what's best for the your angel.

My husband always says, there no such thing as a free kitten.
the same can be said about fish.

i hope that she doesn't choose a conditioner that binds ammonia - can't use it with bio-spira, if she gets lucky and can find that.

Depending on how long that fish has been in that bag, I do not see a very good survival rate for it. The nitrates have to be very high and the ammonia at this point toxic, not to mention the lack of oxygen. Angel fish are very fragile fish.. needing a cycled tank, warm temperatures and a clean environment. As I posted in one of her other four threads with the same question, I do congratulate her on trying to do the best she can for a fish that was basically thrown at her for care.

Hi!

Was it 4 places!? I appreciate her trying to help her fish - a quick glance at her FW begginers version of this thread will prove that. She can't help it not being cycled - she's a caring person and would have done that had she been given any time in advance.

Um, what does consternation mean? Oh, I can hear dinner downstairs! Bye!

Mods.....can Kosami's threads be combined?

If so, and you think appropriate, thank you.

I also posted in one of her other threads, but she does seem to be trying to make up for other people's irresponsibility with fish...I hope she can keep the poor fella alive!

I would see about returning the fish because you don't have adequate facilities to house it. It's a rush to get it all together, kind of expensive, and the fish might die anyway.

But if you can't return it and MUST keep it, you need to get it out of the bag asap. they only have an hour or so of air.

First, run out and get yourself a water treatment that dechlorinates water (API, Prime...both fine). You can keep the fish in a large mixing bowl or something until you get the tank together.

Fill the bowl halfway with room temp water, about 72F, and put the bag in the water and let it equalize temperature. after 15 minutes or so, open the bag and pour some water into the bag. wait another 10 minutes and pour the contents of the bag into the bowl.

Then, get yourself some kind of tank. 10 gallon tanks are very cheap and will do just fine for a while (you will need to get something larger down the road). You can get one for $10 most places. You don't necessarily need a hood right away so you can skimp a little bit there.

Next, get a filter. I'd get something that's going to work for you final tank size (probably 20 or 30 gallons). You don't want to skimp here, get either an Aquaclear 20 or 30, or a Pengion Biowheel (for 20 or 30 gallons).

Last, you need to get a heater. I strongly recommend the Marineland Visi-Therm.

To set up the tank; put it where you're going to keep it cus you can't move it once it's full. Fill it most of the way with treated water that's close to the temperature of the bowl. Put the filter and heater in. set the heater to about 2 degrees warmer than the temperature of the bowl (you can't change temps too fast).

Now put the fish in the tank, along with all the water from the bowl. change 25% of the water every day, this will get you started and should keep the fish alive.

(Personal confession: my first fish were kind of a rush like this too. My cousin was moving and I had to take all the fish, otherwise they'd just die. I had a tank and all that, but knew NOTHING about fishkeeping. All the fish stayed in a 5 gallon bucket with an airstone for about 2 days...It's possible to get everything together in a pinch, but it's not good!)

Unless you have close to 200$ to get the proper equipment that will get you by, I'd definitely take it back/return it to the friend, etc.

It's best to return the fish, but you folks are really pessimistic about it. It's possible to do things this way, I had to do it and didn't lose any fish. (Yes, I HAD to do it.)

$10 for a 10gal aquarium (no lid)
$30 for a filter
$20 for a heater
$10 for food and water treatment

for a BARE essentials startup. It takes LOT of work to keep the fish alive though.
